General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has stated that although the party did not bus supporters to the Supreme Court in support of former COCOBOD CEO Dr. Stephen Opuni, the supporters did so in accordance with the core values of the NDC.

The NDC General Secretary was reacting to reports that the NDC had bused supporters to the Supreme Court premises on Monday March 26, in support of Dr. Opuni who is standing trial for causing financial loss to the state.

Speaking on TV3 New Day on Tuesday, Asiedu Nketiah denied knowledge of the NDC doing any such thing.

He however added that the supporters were only acting based on the principles of the NDC which focuses on showing solidarity to one another.

“They may even be ordinary party members, but the fact is that the party did not bus anybody. They were acting according to the core principles of the NDC where we believe in liberty, justice and solidarity,” Asiedu Nketiah noted.

According to him, when one member of the party is affected the others have the feeling to go and solidarise.

“We are talking about an allegation against a member, and we are in a common law tradition where you are innocent until proven guilty, so if any party member expresses the wish to solidarise with anybody innocent, I do not think there is a breach anywhere.”

Some leading members of the NDC like the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah himself, National Organiser, Kofi Adams and others were there themselves to support Dr. Opuni.

The former COCOBOD CEO, Dr. Opuni appeared in court yesterday amidst heavy security presence for the first day of hearing for the case against him and businessman Seidu Agongo and AgriCult Ghana Company Limited – in GHS217million contracts between 2014 and 2016, in which the state suspects were criminally executed.

Dr. Opuni was granted bail to the tune of 300,000 Ghana cedis after he pleaded not guilty to all 7 charges leveled against him.

The case was subsequently adjourned to April 11, 2018 for the second hearing.
