Parliament Won’t Make Laws That Will Damage the Media

Minority leader in parliament, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has stated that Ghana is in the process of passing the right to information and broadcasting bill.

The former minister for communications further mentioned that there is no debate about a public consensus on the passage of the bill and that the freedom of journalists in the country is guaranteed constitutionally.

Speaking at the world press freedom day, an annual event held at the press international centre, the Minority leader charged the media to be innovative saying, “parliament will not legislate on any law that will damage the media.”

He added, the Minority and Majority are collectively fighting corruption and that the legislature is not in a dilemma in any sort with regards to the passing of the “twin bills”

However, president for the Ghana Journalists association, Mr. Affail Monney urged the media to divert their attention from filth and ethical misconduct and rather sharpen the skills of practising on the new code of ethics

Hon Adwoa Sarfo, the deputy majority leader in parliament was present on behalf of the executive.

On a speech read on behalf of the executive she stressed that both bills have reached the consideration stage and that no government has underrated its passage.

Among those present at the gathering was the Minister for information, Mustapha Hamid, who further noted that the passage of the bill is non-negotiable.

Chairman of the Ghana Media Commission, Nana Kwesi Gyan-Apenteng, Dr Lawrence Tetteh a reverend minister and some members of the press were also present at the event
