The National Service Secretariat has resurrected the long-forgotten six-month military training for all Ghanaian graduates.

According to a recent report from Myjoyonline.com, Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul disclosed that the National Service Secretariat wrote to his office asking that the implementation of the military training be commenced once again.

The NSS 6 months military training according to the Service Secretariat, is necessary in order to instill discipline in the youth.

The National Service Act of 1980, Act 426, which established the NSS, states in Section 4 (1) of  the Act – Duration of National Service  states “the period of national service in respect of any person under this Act shall be two years, so however that this period shall include a minimum of six months military training.

But just two years into implementation of the policy, the military aspect was truncated, with the service period reduced to one year. Several futile attempts have since been made to revive this aspect of the mandatory service.

Now, the new administration at NSS wants the policy re-implemented.

The National Service Scheme is a constitutional mandate for all newly qualified Ghanaian university graduates. The scheme is organised for individuals under the age of 40, who have graduated from accredited tertiary institutions. These graduates are required under law to do a one-year national service to the country.

The NSS which is governed by Act 426, is supervised by the government and is mandatory for all Ghanaian graduates irrespective of the type of sponsorship the individual may have received or the country in which the tertiary course was pursued in.

Some of the major goals of the National Service Scheme include:

* To develop common ties among Ghanaians and promote national unity and integration.

* To develop a sense of corporate existence and common destiny of the people of Ghana.

* To avail Ghanaian youths the opportunity to acquire the spirit of self-reliance by encouraging them to develop entrepreneurial and self-employment skills.
