Deputy General Secretary for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho has accused President Akufo-Addo of being behind the move to kick out the Electoral Commissioner, Madam Charlotte Osei from office.

According to the NDC Deputy Chief Scribe, President Nana Akufo-Addo and his Vice Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as well as the entire ruling NPP want to manipulate the system to work in their favour in the upcoming District Chief Executive elections in 2019 and the main elections in 2020.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ Morning Show, Koku Anyidoho alleged that the NPP is engineering Charlotte Osei’s impeachment moves in order to throw out all the Electoral Commissioners and replace them with their own people.

“Akufo-Addo and Bawumia passed bad comments about the EC boss and so the impeachment approach started from them; this is very political coming from the top. They want to manipulate the system and that is why they want EC officials out in order to massage the DCE elections in 2019 and the main elections in 2020,” Koku Anyidoho alleged.

He however, warned that they [the opposition] are watching to see what their attempts will turn out to be. Mr. Anyidoho explained that the NPP led by Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia prior to the 2016 elections expressed their dislike for Madam Charlotte Osei when they ‘lied’ that the voter’s register is bloated with foreigners.

Speaking further, he stressed that the NPP government are not being fair to the EC Chair. Pointing out that the NPP “made it manifestly clear” that they will get rid of Charlotte Osei while the were still in opposition, Anyidoho insisted that the current developments are clearly pointing to the fact that they are behind Charlotte Osei’s impeachment moves. For him, President Akufo-Addo only accepted the petition against the EC Boss simply because he is interested in her removal.

Continuing, the NDC Deputy General Secretary alleged that the removal of some state officials is not only restricted to the Electoral Commission, indicating that there are ongoing moves to also remove the head of Bank of Ghana and that of the Military Service.

“They are not doing this to only EC but to Bank of Ghana and the Military Service. Ken Ofori-Atta has been calling people that he cannot work with them, he wants to be President of Ghana,”Koku Anyidoho alleged.

The EC Boss has for some months now been embattled, following agitations from some staff of the Electoral Commission who were calling for the impeachment of the EC boss on grounds of a breach of Procurement Law. Read full story here.

Following the controversy which ensued, the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo set up a committee to look into the alleged abuse of power and corruption scandals bedeviling the EC. The five-member committee was expected to investigate the EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, together with her two deputies – Georgina Opoku-Amankwah, who is in charge of Corporate Services and Amadu Sulley, in charge of Operations – as prescribed under Article 146 of the 1992 constitution.

Charlotte Osei alongside her two deputies will now have to face a probe after all three top EC officials appeared individually before the Chief Justice in the company of their lawyers, at the office of the Judicial Service located at the Supreme Court on Monday, December 11. To enable her face the hearing, it has been hinted that the Chief Justice and the Judicial Council may recommend that President Nana Addo suspends the EC Chair from her position.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Osei has written to president Nana Akufo-Addo demanding an official copy of a petition seeking her removal. She has also written to the Judicial Council acknowledging the invitation to appear before the Committee to preside over her possible impeachment proceedings.
