Mosquito’s Comments ‘insensitive’ – Atik

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was “insensitive” with his public utterances on the lynching of Captain Maxwell Mahama, Atik Mohammed, General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has said.

Capt Mahama on Monday, May 29 was beaten to death by some irate youth of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

But Mr Nketia, in a statement released on Wednesday May 31, said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is to blame for the development.

“The NDC is laying blame for this heinous and callous lynching of Captain Mahama at the doorstep of President Akufo-Addo,” the statement said.

According to the party, Ghana has known no peace since the NDC, led by former President John Dramani Mahama, handed over power to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Under the direct supervision of President Akufo-Addo, the state has watched and sponsored its goon squads to unleash wanton mayhem on innocent Ghanaians. From the beating up of a serving police officer at the Flagstaff House to the beating up of a regional security co-ordinator, the disruption of a court process, the burning of toll booths, and the molestation of civil servants, the lawless culture of impunity has now reached the doorstep of the Ghana Armed Forces,” the statement signed by its General Secretary Johnson Aseidu Nketia said.

But reacting to the NDC General Secretary’s comments on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on Thursday, June 1, Mr Atik said: “Asiedu Nketia was insensitive to the family of the deceased. He was very insensitive.”

“I concede that there are general security issues in this country which ought to be discussed very well, but this is not the time, this certainly is not the time to begin to even build conspiracy theories.

“There are issues with the way security has been handled since January, we have spoken about it, but I feel that the matter at hand at the moment is a very sad one and the least you can do as a political party is to commiserate with the bereaved. That is the least you can do. If you don’t have anything to say, just keep quiet.”
