Jon Benjamin, the outgoing British High Commissioner to Ghana, has said he has never engaged in personal attacks on anyone over his comments on the country’s social matters.

According to him, there is no way he could have sat through his three-year tenure without having an opinion on issues affecting the country.

He argued there is no point in sitting idly, behind a desk and not saying anything.

The British diplomat has been the center of numerous criticisms by citizens and politicians of the country, for his rather vocal views and ideas on the political atmosphere and social issues happening in the country.

With a vibrant Twitter presence, Mr. Benjamin has given many opinions on different happenings in Ghana; be it political, social or religious, and this has not sat well with some Ghanaians.

He has been accused of being a ‘troll’ often, as some Ghanaians believe he enjoys making a mockery of certain issues that affect the country.

However, speaking on Citi FM’s morning show on Monday, Mr. Benjamin refuted these claims, stating most of his tweets were in response to questions directed at him.

“A lot of the time I am answering questions people put to me but what I don’t do is to engage in personal insults and call people the sort of epithets that I get called and I think it is very sad when people descend to that level because it’s fine to disagree with people and I am very happy to be disagreed with,” he said.

He further noted that his online presence is just a fraction of his bigger role, which he described as ‘traditional diplomacy.’

Mr. Benjamin further said that during his time here, he had grown to love Ghana and would miss the country once his tenure is over.
