TV3 Lays Off 100 Workers -In a massive restructuring exercise, Ghanaian International Television Station has laid off up to a hundred workers. The retrenchment exercise saw 40 management staff and 60 junior staff badly affected. A letter seen by Citi News stated that the decision was made due to the ongoing organizational and workforce restructuring of the Media General group comprising TV3.

Barely six months after the company dismissed a good number of workers, TV3 lays off a huge chunk of its workers. The company has been in the news lately after management of the television got sued by a cross section of workers who made the case that the retrenchment exercise was not appropriate – a development which has seen the working union embark on a massive demonstration.

Meanwhile, management of the television station reveals that the massive layoffs will not in any way affect the programming of the television station.

It will be recalled that in February 2017, the same company sacked about 35 of its technical staff for protesting against management. The aggrieved staff wore a red colored band to protest their working conditions, demanding better conditions of service and salary increment.

The 32 staff were said to have taken part in the strike spanning about a week without serving notice of their intentions to management, and without providing management with an opportunity to engage with the aggrieved personnel. However, the management who was having none of that, had them stripped of their positions.

Lots of criticisms were hurled at the management of the company for what was regarded as an infringement on the right of expression the workers.

But TV3 justified its actions maintaining that the staff’s actions were a “breach of the ethics and legal requirements” regarding the employer/employee relationship. A statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Jimi Matthews, dated February 28, 2017, said the affected staff from various departments, embarked on an industrial action without following due procedure.
