This is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to educate local communities on appropriate waste disposal as well as reduce their environmental impact. The exercise saw over 600 participants join the local community members to rid the beach of filth.

Speaking on the occasion, Corporate Relations Director of GGBL, Gabriel Opoku-Asare, said “GGBL strongly advocates for building strong and sustainable local communities and enriching the lives of people. This is underpinned by the belief that businesses and communities are inseparable – our employees, our raw materials and various aspects of our operations are derived from these communities.”

He continued, “Industry has been working assiduously to find a long term solution the plastic waste management in Ghana. There are a number of sustainable solutions to this challenge both innovative and behavioral.

At a just ended workshop organized by UNDP, GGBL and Impact Hub, we were amazed at the various innovations that plastics can be used for – from bitumen additives for roads to construction of affordable housing and we believe with commitment from government and all stakeholders the right policies will be developed and adopted.”

Kweku Sekyi-Cann, Marketing Director of GGBL also added, “Malta Guinness, the nation’s favourite malt as part of celebrating three decades of goodness have decided to rally all well-meaning Ghanaians to this beach cleaning exercise. As a brand with purpose, we believe that goodness thrives best in cleanliness.

In subsequent weeks, we have lined up a series of exciting activities which celebrates and rewards consumers’ loyalty to brand Malta Guinness and we will continue to be an effective part of the socio economic fabric of Ghana. We are also grateful for the acceptance the community gave us as we came into their locality. Let us remember that litters should bein the bins and not the floor.”

Kojo Akoto Boateng, Coordinator of NShoreNa also reiterated their commitment to saving beaches. He added, “NShoreNa has over the years worked on creating awareness and in most instances organized exercises to rid some of the beaches of waste and restore them to their natural clean state. One of the key beach restoration exercises was carried out last year in partnership with GGBL at the Sakumono Beach. Our aim is to showcase Ghana’s tourism potentials and environmental challenges along our beaches. Three key things to work on are management of plastics, effective waste disposal and collection for communities and provision of affordable toilets for homes and communities.”

After the exercise, GGBL presented some bins to the community. Hon. Alfred Laryea, the assemblyman for the Krowor community thanked GGBL and NShoreNa for the gesture and promised to use the bins for a weekly clean up exercise.

Also present for the Goodness on the Beach campaign were representatives from the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), ZoomLion, Youth Employment Agency, Accra Golden and Diamond Lions Club with their Leos, Eagle Youth, SEDCOM and employees of GGBL.
