President Akufo-Addo announced the package when he visited the family on Monday [June 5], as it observed a week of the military man’s passing.

According to the president, the fund is specifically to take care of Major Mahama’s wife and two children.

He also pledged a personal donation of GH¢50,000 to the fund, which will have as part of its trustees Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, and former government statistician, Grace Bediako.

Other dignitaries who accompanied the president were Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo, Minister for Defense Dominic Nitiwul, National Security Minister Kan Dapaah and Trade Minister Alan Kyeremanten.

Describing Major Mahama as a national hero, Nana Akufo-Addo added that, a state burial will be held for the soldier.

He also noted that, the family’s request that a monument is built to remind Ghanaians of the incident and the need to end the act of mob justice, will be granted.

Meanwhile, Nana Akufo-Addo has approved a recommendation from the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. O. B. Akwa that the late Captain Mahama be promoted to the rank of Major.

The deceased, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, was lynched and partly burnt by some youth of Denenkyira-Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region on Monday, May 29, 2017, on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

About 41 people have been remanded in police custody over their alleged involvement in the gruesome killing of the officer.

The family has set June 9, as the date for the burial of Captain Adams Mahama.
