Professor Paul Ahiatroga of the University of Cape Coast, has advised successive governments to ensure that persons appointed to head the Ghana Education Service are members of the service, not someone from outside.

The President upon assuming office appointed Prof. Opoku-Amankwa, the Dean of International Programmes at the Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science and Technology as the GES Director General.

But speaking at the 5th Quadrennial district conference of the Akatsi branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Prof Paul said such appointments are misplaced since the appointee does not belong to the Teachers’ union.

He argued that Government in consultation with the Education Council should have picked an equally qualified member from the service and not somone from outside the service since the outsider may take the time to find his feet.

“My opinion is that, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service should be a member of the service and not somebody from outside. My heart bled the day I saw the text message on my phone, appointing somebody from the University; a lecturer to be the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service. This is a sickness! Can you go on and appoint a technician or a lawyer to be the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service? I think there is something wrong!  It is only the owner of a room that knows where it leaks. I can assure you that it would take this man some time to learn what is happening in the service before he can move ahead.”

Speaking on the theme “Transforming Society through Education; The Role of Teacher of Education and the Teacher in Attainment of Agenda 2030”, Prof Ahiatroga also called for a more appropriate and broader recognition of the work of the teacher in the growth of the nation.

“My candid opinion is that, the time has come for us to move beyond “best teacher award scheme”. Let’s think a scheme or schemes that would benefit more teachers than just a few,” he added.
