The Justice and Security Sub-Committee of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has appealed to the Ministry for the Interior and Ministry of Defense to collaborate and provide residents of Christian Village the needed security.

Residents of Christian Village and Official town, suburbs of Ashaiman, are living in fear due to the increase in armed robberies in the area.

According to the residents, they stay awake during the night as the criminals patrol the area on motorbikes and break into people’s home.

Nii Ayiku Osabutey, Chairman of the Justice and Security Sub-Committee of ASHMA, told the Ghana News Agency that the two ministries must collaborate to give the area the needed personnel to patrol the area.

Mr Osabutey, who is the assemblyman for Official town electoral area, explained that the Municipality does not have enough police personnel to provide the needed security for the area which armed robbers have taken advantage of to terrorize residents.

He added that the Ministry of Defense could provide the Municipality with military patrols to augment the work of the police and ensure that residents went about their businesses in peace.

He said the Committee over the years had formed watch dog committees in communities but because they operated without arms and ammunitions, members could not match the armed robbers who used implements and sophisticated weapons.

He noted that the Committee would ensure that the Assembly provided more police posts in the Municipality to ward off criminal activities.

Mr Charles Kissi, Assemblyman for the Niiman electoral area, on his part, said he initiated some security measures in some communities including formation of watchdog committees and gating facilities.

Mr Kissi however stated that it was unfortunate that most residents of Christian village refused to attend community meetings to initiate some of the security measures.

He also urged them to report suspicious characters to the police as those criminals terrorizing them resided in the community.
