There have been several conflicting reports on happenings that led to him being lynched. Reports suggested that the Captain was going on jogging and asked for directions from some women who gave him up as a bait to the Assemblyman of the area and some youth who beat him till he gave up the ghost.

Various life-threatening objects were used in attacking Captain Maxwell Mahama by angry residents of Debkyira-Boase who mistook him for an armed robber. The residents, who would not listen to pleas of the soldier to the effect that he was a mistaken identity and that he was not a criminal as they thought, pummeled him continuously with various objects until he died.

His death necessitated the deployment of 300 Soldiers to Denkyira-Obuasi in search of the gun of the Captain and also to assist in the investigation. Six people were arrested as a result of the security presence there while the Assemblyman who led the mob attack gave himself out to the police voluntarily. The seven were prepared for court and remanded to re-appear on the 19th of June. Subsequently, some perpetrators of the heinous crime who were on the run were arrested by police in various communities bringing the number to 42.

President John Dramani Mahama visited the family of Captain Mahama and assured them that he will take care of the family. The Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia also visited the family and promised that government will assist in the burial.

One week observation for the late captain took place at the Captain’s residence in at Burma Camp that saw in attendance former President John Dramani Mahama, Dag Heward Mills and other dignitaries.

Captain Maxwell Mahama will be buried in Accra on Friday, June 9th after which there will be a family meeting on Saturday and thanksgiving service on Sunday. The family will then move the funeral from Accra to Bole . The funeral will end in Tumu on 17th June.

Meanwhile, the people of Denkyira-Obuasi have pacified their gods but have ostracized individuals who played roles in the killing of the Captain.
