Investigations on the health conditions of the over 20 sick students of the St Martins SHS have been concluded, and according to doctors, no serious medical condition led to the incidents.

The Medical Superintendent of Nsawam Government Hospital, Dr. Kofi Ablorh who spoke on Citi Eyewitnesses News, allayed people’s fears of an outbreak of a viral disease, pointing out that the situation is normal. According to him, medical check ups revealed that the students who mainly complained of heartaches had no underlying health problem.

He rather suggested, just as the school authority earlier indicated, that the student’s ill health may have been triggered by examination phobia, noting that this is not the first time students of St Martins SHS have fallen ill in large numbers ahead of exams.

Over 20 students of the St. Martins Senior High school located in Nsawam in the Eastern Region were hospitalized after they collapsed or fell ill between Sunday night and Monday morning.

It was reported that about eight to ten of the students were rushed to the Nsawam Government Hospital after they collapsed during prep on Sunday night while some others collapsed during Assembly on Monday morning. Other students were also said to have reported at the hospital later on Monday over one ailment or the other. Although some of them have been treated and discharged, some others are still receiving treatments.

News of the incident had triggered new fears in parents and students, considering the recent outbreak of Influenza Type 1 at the Kumasi Academy, claiming four lives in less than a week.

Meanwhile, parents and other concerned persons have called on both the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS), to properly look into the prevailing health condition in various high schools to prevent the re-occurrence of health hazards among the students.
