DVLA Hints of Higher Fees For New Drivers’ License

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has revealed new drivers’ licences expected to come into force from July 18 will cost more to obtain.

The DVLA says although it is yet to fix the price for the new licences, the

existing charges will not quite cover the cost of producing the upgraded ones.

Chief Executive Officer of DVLA, Kwasi Agyemang Busia, told Joy News factors such as the speed in producing the new licenses and its improved quality and security features will hike up costs.

The new licenses are expected to be delivered within four weeks of application.

“It’s a decision made on analysis, it’s a decision made on what has gone into it…there is a lot of variables that are going into it. So the pricing will be available before the 18th of July. For now, I can say that it is going to be more than the one that we had. It will be reasonable for the citizenry, but it is going to be more,” he said.

He revealed that DVLA will no longer contract private firms to print the drivers’ licenses or documents such as roadworthy certificates.

Mr Agyemang Busia also revealed that the Authority has procured its own machines for printing such sensitive documents.

The DVLA was last year embroiled in contractual issues with private firm Foto X over the printing of the drivers’ license.
