The Ghanaian government seems to be getting a fair share of disasters in this early part of the year 2017. Just days after the Parliament was greeted with a heavy rainstorm which caused the house roof to leak, Flagstaff House officials have been served another form of disaster -missing vehicles.

Government officials including President Nana Akufo-Addo have been rendered immobile as over 200 cars at the Presidency have reportedly gone missing. To be precise, government has revealed that there are 208 cars unaccounted for at the Flagstaff House’s vehicle pool following the change in government on January 7, 2017.

The Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin who made this known, said that government took notice of the missing cars after the assessment of five car models in the car pool inventory of the Flagstaff House.

Though the new government cannot take all the blame; the idea that this development emphasizes profound carelessness on the part of government cannot be waived aside.

The Director of communications has given a clear report regarding the number of cars expected to be at the Presidency after the transition. Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show dubbed Ghana Montie, Eugene Arhin said the documents provided by the transport officer at the Presidency, totaled up to 208 cars meant to be available for the house.

According to the report, the presidency was supposed to have a total of 196 Toyota land cruiser vehicles, 73 Toyota Land Cruiser Prados, 24 Mercedes Benz, 6 BMWs and other vehicles. According to Mr Arhin, the new government has discovered that there is a massive difference in the number of cars available and the number expected.

For the Landcruiser vehicles, which totaled 196 in the transport document; only 74 were found. Here is a clear analysis on the difference in the number of vehicles.

How Bad Has it Gotten?

Eugene Arhin on the show, also emphasized on the great inconvenience which this unwelcome development has caused the Presidency. Mr Arhin pointed out that President Nana Addo has been forced to resort to use a 2007 model of a saloon car -the vehicle he used during the 2016 campaign.

Nana Addo has also had to use his private means of transport on trips outside the Greater Accra Region and for other official duties.

Government has set up a task-force with the responsibility of retrieving state assets unlawfully being held by individuals.

Although the statement announcing the “Task-force on Retrieval of State Assets” did not make direct reference to officials of the immediate past government, questions have been raised regarding the immunity of the opposition members.

Notwithstanding the hitches, it is hoped that the body will succeed in recovering the missing vehicles to enable officials get back to their duties. The agencies represented on this task force are the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the office of the President.
