A petition dated Wednesday, February 15, 2017 and intercepted by Today to the president through the ministry of transport stressed the need to integrate the shipyard into GPHA.

According to the petitioners, GPHA has been a backbone to the Tema Shipyard and bailed it from some Malaysian investment and Strategic Investment Advisers a total amount of US $6,860,000.

The petitioners explained that the necessary equipment and machinery that make the shipyard number one in Africa was being provided by GPHA and therefore do not see the need to be parallel from GPHA.

Chairmen of the Senior and Junior Staff Unions, Christian Dogbey and Samuel Kwame Attram, stressed the urgent need for a modern state-of-the-art face-lift and retooling in order to meet international standards.

The two further called for capacity building of human resource base, industrial training, to equip management, technical and administrative staff.

They also called for good conditions of service to commensurate hazardous and risk nature of the industry.

According to them, the shipyard under former Managing Director, Mr. Ali Tunde, could only work on several vessels in a full-year period of active production with revenue of GHC17 million making reference to January to December 2015.

“This amount has extremely risen from seven vessels a year to 14 vessels within six months with a revenue of Gh¢21 million when the new MD, Mr. Botse Miccah, was brought from GPHA to the Tema Shipyard.

The petitioners seized the chance to commended President Akufo-Addo for the appointment of Mr. Paul Asare Ansah.
