A team from the Foundation on Friday, March 24, 2017 visited the hospital to assess the progress of work so far.

The project, which is attracting 4.2 million Ghana Cedis, begun in November 2016, and is expected to be completed and handed over to the hospital for use in September this year.

The facility, when completed is expected to help relieve the pressure on existing facilities at the hospital, as a result of the increasing population.

The project, on completion, is anticipated to serve the growing health needs of the over 12,000 pregnant women who visit the hospital annually for deliveries.

Executive Director of MTN, Cynthia Lumor, in an interview after a tour of the facility, averred that the Foundation will also support equipping the maternity block.

According to her, maternal health, which impacts families and societies and has far reaching effects across every socio-economic stratum, was a critical topic in global development.

She said the Foundation’s decision to build the maternity block for the Tema General Hospital was triggered by a television news item which highlighted the struggle faced by the hospital in trying to find funding to complete such a project.

She pointed out that interventions in health by MTN in this regard, would help address development challenges and reduce the maternal mortality rate, while addressing other Millennium Development Goals.

She announced that MTN was committed to supporting government in bringing quality health care to Ghanaians.

The project will contain a 20-bed facility, first stage ward, a lying-in ward, one theater, 7 bed monitoring/recovery ward, nurses’ station and changing rooms, sluice rooms, pantry and a store, two consulting rooms, two doctors’ office/restrooms, nurses’ office, nurses’ restroom, kitchen, restrooms and a reception.
