Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Yusif Tanko has revealed that the recent claims by the New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called Chairman Wontumi, that some arms and ammunition were stored somewhere in Kumasi are mere unfounded claims.

Chairman Wontumi last week alleged that they had a tip off of some arms and ammunition in the custody of unknown persons in  Kumasi. According to him, the stock of arms and ammunition are being piled up ahead of the polls to harass voters in the NPP’s stronghold.

But speaking to Kwame Adinkrah on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo, ASP Tanko explained that Wontumi’s Kumasi ammunition claims were mere false alarms raised by the NPP Chairman, to bring about fear and panic in the region for no just cause. According to the Police PRO, Chairman Wontumi since after reporting the matter, has failed to provide the police with the necessary information that will help them carry out investigations on the matter.

Yusif Tanko indicated that Chairman Wontumi had reported that he got information that some military vehicles were carrying guns to Kumasi. This he [Wontumi] said while addressing journalists. According to Wontumi, he followed the vehicles to Asuoyeboa SSNIT Flat and made a phone call to the police who escorted him alongside military personnel to intercept the guns.

ASP Tanko explained that since the matter was seen as a a serious one, all police commanders were asked if there had received any complaint of a sort. They also went to the house based on the number Wontumi gave them and called him for further clarification on the description of the house or better still to come to the venue and point the house to them. However, he [Wontumi] was unable to tell them the name of the location, the police the guns were handed over, nor the bus or military personnel who intercepted the guns.

Explaining further, ASP Tanko said that up till now the NPP chairman has provided any evidence to back up his claims nor has he told them why he failed to take pictures of the vehicles loaded with guns which he said he saw.

That aside, Yusif Tanko also said that Wontumi called again this Saturday and complained that some people have also stock piled guns in Tanoso at a certain house. But on getting there, nothing was found except Wontumi and some journalists.

He therefore warned Bernard Antwi Boasiako to desist from such false alarms as the police will no longer take it lightly if such happens again.

Wontumi’s Kumasi ammunition claims is not the only alleged fabricated story of the NPP as the elections draw near. It has also been alleged by the NDC that the report of thumb-printed ballot papers found in a room at Madison Hotel in Kumasi was also fabricated by the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman.
