This intention was disclosed to President Nana Akufo-Addo when the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich called on him to deliver a congratulatory message from the Pope on Wednesday, 22nd February, 2017.

According to the Pope, his intention of sending down a Vatican envoy to attend Ghana’s 60th Independence Day celebration is propelled by his high regard for President Akufo-Addo, and his recognition of Ghana’s democracy.

Pope Francis, through the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, congratulated Nana Addo on his victory in the 2016 presidential polls. Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich on his own part requested for Nana Addo to appoint a new Ghanaian Ambassador to Vatican since there is none at the moment.

Responding to the congratulatory message, President Akufo-Addo expressed immense appreciation to the Pope for the honourable recognition. He also thanked the Pope as well as the Catholic Church for the great work they have been doing in Ghana and the world at large. The President also promised to boost the relationship between Ghana and Vatican during his tenure in office.

The Republic of Ghana will on 7th March mark her 60th Anniversary having gained independence from British rule on 7th March 1957. Preparations have been going on for the land mark celebration.

So far, a committee has been set up to see to the necessary arrangements towards the activities of the celebration. The committee has unveiled the programme of events for the celebration, with the “I Pledge” campaign drawing huge attention. According to the Committee Chairman, Mr. Ken Amankwah, the “I Pledge” campaign is meant to rally all Ghanaians to play a role in nation building.

President Akufo-Addo has emphatically pointed out that he has no intention of burdening the state purse with much expenditure as regards the celebration.

Ghanaians on their own part do not want what transpired during the country’s 50th anniversary to ever be repeated; and the president has promised it will never. Nana Addo also hinted that funds for the celebration will not be generated by the government alone, but also by the private sector and individual Ghanaians.

To encourage the prudence, the [email protected] committee has volunteered to render their services to the nation free of charge! This is the first ever recorded in the history of Ghana.
