One would easily have doubts on whether former President Rawlings is a fan of sports or not. While we may not provide an appropriate answer to that, it is important to bring to light a profound expression of concern by the former president towards three Ghanaian boxers recently.

Former President Rawlings donated GHC 4,000 to three Ghanaian boxers scheduled to fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC) International title fights on Saturday, March 11, at the Bukom Boxing Arena. This was in his bid to show concern to the boxers ahead of their big day.

The donation was also a form of support for the sport which has garnered so much attention across the country. While giving them the money, the former President said the donation was his little contribution to the preparation of the three boxers, and urged them to make the nation proud on the D-day.

He urged them to put in a lot of effort in order to justify the investment that has been made on them, as well as show the world the stuff they are made of.

Richard Commey, one of the boxers who spoke on behalf of the others, expressed their appreciation to the former President for the love shown them. Calling him a mentor, he assured Papa J that they will not disappoint in the coming games.

“We will not disappoint you but work hard to make you and Ghana proud. We shall come back to show you the titles after the fight.”

The three boxers; Richard Commey, Duke Micah and Fredrick Lawson, are professional boxers who have earned lots of appraisals for themselves through their remarkable feats.

The 28-year-old lightweight boxer has won the Ghanaian lightweight title, International Boxing Federation (IBF) Continental Africa lightweight title, African Boxing Union (ABU) lightweight title, International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter-Continental lightweight title, and Commonwealth lightweight title. Out of his over 25 fights, the boxer has lost only  2. It is hoped that his good records will reflect in the upcoming fight.

The 25-year-old Bantamweight boxer is one of Ghana’s promising boxers who has achieved a lot within a short period of time. Wining all of his 16 fights, there is so much hope placed on Micah in the upcoming fights. His last fight saw him win the (vacant) Commonwealth (British Empire) bantamweight title, where he beat Matthew Chanda of Zambia at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, by a split decision.

The young man holds the WBO Africa bantamweight title which he acquired in his 12th bout, where he knocked out Ekow Wilson, also of Ghana, in the third round.

The 27-year-old welterweight boxer will be facing Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings. At stake will be the vacant WBC international silver welterweight belt. In 2013, Fredrick Lawson also known as General Okunka, won the International Boxing Federation Continental Africa Welterweight champion. He also won the International Boxing Federation International Welterweight champion that same year.
