‘We Are Ever Ready to Debate’ on Ford Expedition Motion – Majority to Minority

Members of Parliament (MPs) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have dared their colleagues in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding plans to move a motion to impeach the President over a Ford Expedition saga.
Majority leader, Alban Bagbin, says the NPP MPs should not be blinded into thinking they will railroad their way through.
“Let me assure our colleagues opposite that we on this side are ever ready, any time, any day to debate whatever motion is accepted for this House to debate,” he told the Speaker of Parliament during sitting Thursday.
The Minority decided to file a motion in the House to have President John Mahama impeached after a Joy News’ Manasseh Awuni Azure investigation revealed the Ghanaian leader was gifted a Ford Expedition vehicle valued at $100,000.
It was given to him by a Burkinabe contractor, Djibril Oumarou Kanozoe who has received three government contracts.
A government statement admitted the President received the gift but said it has been added to the pool of cars at the Presidency.
President Mahama came under heavy criticism resulting in the decision by the Youth League of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and a private individual to petition the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the matter.
The NPP MPs also promised to initiate steps to get President Mahama impeached on grounds of conflict of interest.
Minority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has revealed the motion has been submitted, but awaiting discussions on the floor of the House.
“Mr Speaker the motion that was submitted we are ever ready to discuss that motion,” he said.
But Mr Bagbin says the NDC MPs will not be intimidated by the NPP into backing down from any debate. “We will debate anybody.”
He argues the Ford Expedition saga is in the same category as the Benz X-500 vehicle given to erstwhile President John Agyekum Kufuor by the Libyan government.
He says he is surprised the MPs, will believe the President of Ghana will be bribed by mere Ford Expedition. “It is a shame.”
