Reports have revealed that some hours ahead of the polls which commences at 7. 00 am on Wednesday, hundreds of Ghanaians have already started forming queues at various polling stations across the country. But the very interesting aspect of it is the very unconventional means many of them used to reserve positions for themselves in the queues. An innovation 3news tagged “unorthodox queues”.

TV3’s Stanley Blewu who reported from the Botwe School polling station in the Okaikoi constituency in Accra said that scores of electorate started queuing Tuesday night just about six hours to the opening of the polls. According to him, some anxious eligible voters showed up at their respective polling stations as early as 7:30 pm Tuesday, to keep vigil in a queue while others used stones, sandcrete blocks, wooden benches and refrigerators among other items to secure spots in the queue.

Also, Onua FM’s Janet Owusu Afriyie who reported from Santa Maria in the Anyaa-Sowutuom constituency said people started queuing at Auntie ku’ Winners School polling station from 7:30 pm too. According to Janet, some of the voters were resolved to spend the night at the polling unit while others came with various objects and items to form queues after which they left to their homes to catch some sleep and to return at the dawn of Wednesday.

The funniest of it all is a woman who came with a deep freeze refrigerator which she turned to a bed after securing a spot with it in the queue. See photo below.

It was also gathered that the situation is no different in other polling units across the country.

About 15 million eligible voters are expected to cast their vote in the 2016 general elections holding today, Wednesday December 7. The poll will see to the election of a president for Ghana under the fourth republic as well as 275 members of parliament.

1,255 parliamentary candidates are also vying for the 275 seats representing the country’s 275 constituencies in the legislature.

As the polls are already underway, BuzzGhana wishes Ghana a peaceful, free and fair election. Vote wisely!
