The 2016 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings has placed The University of Ghana (UG) as the best university in West Africa and the seventh in Africa. According to the report by Ghana News Agency (GNA), this was disclosed by the UG Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu at the November Congregation of the University.
THE World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Times Higher Education (THE) magazine.

Prof. Owusu who described the UG’s new rank as a great achievement, said that the university moved from the fourth decile to the fifth between 2015 and 2016 respectively. According to him, the university’s strongest pillar in this year’s ranking is research while that of last year was international outlook.
Prof, Owusu noted that the university is well on track towards her vision of becoming a world class research intensive university. He pointed out that the great achievement was made possible by the joint efforts of the university’s staff, students and stakeholders.
The Vice Chancellor also expressed gratitude and confidence in the establishment of the UG’s Strategic Teams. The Strategic Teams include: Institutional Advancement Team, Agriculture Centres Commercialization Committee, UG Rebranding and Marketing Team, the Medical and Dental School Expansion Team, UG Regional/World Ranking Team, Vice Chancellor Green Team, Independent Power Supply Team and the Laboratory Modernisation Team.
The Strategic Teams have been charged with the responsibility to place the University of Ghana as a “Go to University”. With the teams and the continued support of all and sundry, the VC believes that the school will be placed higher, at both continental and international levels.

Speaking further at the event, Prof Oduro Owusu indicated that the security situation on the University campus had witnessed tremendous improvement. Although he disclosed that a major challenge the university is facing in the area of security, has been the under staffing of the security, he however explained that the Management is working assiduously to find avenues to improve the current staffing situation which include face-to-face discussions to educate students on the need to be security conscious.
Prof. Owusu urged the graduating students to endeavour to improve their already acquired skills and to work hard to take the lead as well as make a difference in the ‘competitive world’. He also expressed his appreciation to the Regional and District Police Command as well as National Security for their efforts and contributions in the maintenance of law and order in the school.
The November Congregation comprised the second batch of students, who completed their studies in the 2015/2016 Academic year; the first batch having graduated in July.
The congregation for the undergraduate students was held at the Great Hall, while that of graduate students was held at the R. S. Amegashi Auditorium simultaneously. The Vice Chancellor delivered his speech at the Great Hall, while the Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Samuel K. Offei delivered it on his behalf at the Amegashie Auditorium.
