Nina and the others were shortlisted from dozens of entries from Ghanaian journalists who were trained and equipped to support the effective implementation of the UN SDGs through rich and quality reportage of issues regarding the goals.

Competing with Nina for the award are Bubu Klinogo of GBC Radio in Accra, Theresa Oppong of Ultimate FM in Kumasi, Michael Mfum Sarpong, a Starr FM correspondent in Sunyani), Abdul Hameed Amponsah of Radio Peace in Winneba  and Umaru Sanda of the Accra-based Citi FM.

The winner of the award, who takes home  a cash prize of GHC6,000, a plague and citation,  will be unveiled at a special ceremony on Monday at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra.

The first and second runners-up will also walk away with a cash prize of GHC3,000 and GHC2,000 respectively plus a citation and plague. The rest will each receive a certificate of merit.

“Furthermore, the top three nominees will be inducted into MFWA’s prestigious Journalism for Change (J4C) Network,” a statement issued by the Foundation said.

Members of the network will be offered regular training opportunities both locally and internationally to enhance their capacity to influence positive changes in society through journalism.

Funded by the UNDP and UNESCO in collaboration with the Media Foundation for West Africa, the project aims at enhancing the media’s capacity to contribute to advancing public understanding, support and involvement in the implementation of the goals.

Nina’s story, which was broadcasted on TV3 and published on 3News on October 5, 2016, centered on the state of education at Osono-Dompe Basic School as the world observed Teachers’ Day.

The only school at Osono-Dompe, a small farming community in the Ga West municipality in the Greater Accra Region, has only one teacher manning the entire kindergarten as well as primary one and two.

Pupils in KG department of the Osono-Dompe Methodist Basic School share one classroom while those in classes one and two are crammed in one classroom, a situation that suggests the pupils may never get the opportunity to go beyond class two.

TV3’s Nina Abena Antwi-Kusi visited the school on the occasion of World Teachers Day to bring the situation of the school to light.
