President Nana Akufo-Addo’s 1 district 1 factory project seems to be getting more positive response from Ghana’s international allies. Turkish ambassador to Ghana, Nesrin Bayazit has assured that the Turkish government will support the 1 district 1 factory project, especially in the agricultural sector.

The Turkish ambassador says Turkey has good expertise in the agricultural value chain and is ready to support Ghana to develop projects in the agricultural sector. Nesrin Bayazit pledged the country’s support towards the 1 district 1 factory project, when she paid a courtesy call on Minister of Information, Mustapha Abdul Hamid at his office in Accra.

She noted that the government of Turkey has already started to support, as well as find ways of engaging Turkish investors in the massive project. The actualization of this project, will surely strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

According to Nesrin Bayazit, trade between Turkey and Ghana stands at 400 million dollars and the goal is to add an additional 100 million dollars in the year 2020.

In his response, Minister of Information, Mr. Hamid thanked the Turkish government for the intended support. He also called for more Turkish investments in Ghana as the country has a favorable environment towards foreign investors.

According to Hamid, there are three principal business destinations for most Ghanaian business people namely, China, Dubai and Turkey. Ghana he said, would strengthen its relation with Turkey by exchanging ideas and technology transfer that would be mutually beneficial.

The one factory one district policy was one of the new government’s flagship promises ahead of their massive victory in the December 2016 elections. Prior to the elections, President Nana Addo had promised to establish a factory in every district across the country. This according to him was part of his plan to create jobs and reduce unemployment among the youth.

The promise however, was followed with huge backlash from the opposition and other government stakeholders who questioned the possibility and feasibility of the policy. But the policy seems to be thriving against all odds as it has begun getting international approval.

Government has revealed plans on how it intends to implement the 1 district 1 factory project. Earlier in January, government said the policy implementation will be achieved in collaboration with private investors. A special organization government said, will be set up specifically for the policy implementation.

Turkey has indicated support towards the project as we can see, and Ghana hopes to get more supporters to aid the implementation of this policy.

This goes to show that there’s really no stopping the 1 district 1 factory policy, which according to Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen, had started under the Kufuor administration before opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) took over power. The policy is also said to be aided by the one million dollars per constituency promise, government has revealed.

Alan Kyerematen who also made this known during his vetting, said that even though the private sector will largely lead the one district one factory project, the one million dollars fund for each constituency will be a major catalyst in turning the plans into reality.
