MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for Techiman South, Hon. Henry Yeboah Yiadom-Boachie, has lauded government for the reintroduction of free supply of fertilisers to famers.

According to him, the re-introduction of the free fertiliser policy, which was abolished by the previous government and other incentives like the GHc94.5 million earmarked for the one-village-one-dam project, will boost farmers’ fortunes.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Today at Parliament House in Accra, the Techiman South lawmaker was of the view that the significant tax incentives granted in this year’s budget, coupled  with an amount of GH¢241.2 million budgeted for social benefits to assist lifeline consumers of electricity and transfers for social protection, was a welcome news.

Hon. Yiadom-Boachie explained that famers in the past had to struggle to get fertiliser even at high cost.

He said that currently a famer has to sell two bags of maize to buy a bag of fertiliser.

This, he noted, has become a bane and disincentive to farmers to extend their farming activities.

“My area is a mixture of farmers and small business operators, so with the abolishing of some killer taxes introduced by the John Mahama-led administration, which were inimical to both famers and business operators, business and farming activities in the area will start booming which will surely put money in people’s pocket,” he added.

The Techiman South MP opined that a robust irrigation policy “one-village-one dam” will make Ghana crop all year round, and eventually become a net exporter of most foodstuff.
