In what has been described as the most striking and touchy retirement episode ever, Mark William Calaway, popularly known as The Undertaker bowed out of Wrestling on Sunday night – 2nd April, 2017.
The greatest World WWE heavyweight champion called it a good day after losing to Roman Reigns in WrestleMania 33 – his second defeat throughout his 27 years of exploits in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

What made The Undertaker’s retirement most striking is that he still threw in the towel in a unique ‘Undertaker style’. Having lost to Reigns, Undertaker removed his gloves, coat, and hat; dropped them in the middle of the ring; spent few seconds savouring the air and admiration of fans; hugged and kissed his wife, Michelle McCool, and then headed straight to the locker room.
In a moment, the thousands of spectators at the wrestling arena where left wondering what this gesture without words from the most indomitable wrestling champion could mean. But it only took them a little while to understand – The Undertaker has just retired!
Now wearing a face and a body that appears to no longer deserve the maltreatments it has been receiving for over a quarter of a decade, the 52-year-old 6ft 10″ giant and vicious wrestling champion moved away with an air of accomplishment. Although The Undertaker is not dead, the feeling in the arena was like that of a gem going home at last to rest in peace! He has given his all and his best!!
Since after The Undertaker’s retirement, fan reactions have been pouring in from different media platforms – twitter, Facebook, television and what have you; with many paying tribute to the heavy weight emeritus, with the hashtag #ThankYouTaker.
Calaway was first introduced in the 1990’s Survivor Series, although he began his wrestling career with World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) in 1984, and has since won 23 matches. He remained a multiple world heavyweight champion – a six-time tag team titleholder and a Royal Rumble winner.
The Undertaker debuted on the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as the final member of Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team. It wasn’t long before he was fighting with Hulk Hogan, who was then at the top of WWE. He was also part of the first-ever Casket Match at Survivor Series in 1992, the first-ever Buried Alive match in 1996, as well as the inaugural Hell in a Cell Match in October 1997.
Throughout his career, The Undertaker lost in only two fights – one to Brock Lesnar, and this one now to Roman Reigns which has turned out to be his last – loss or gain. Also known as a WWE pioneer, he retired as the greatest wrestler the company has ever witnessed.
Nevertheless, the perceived retirement has not been confirmed from William Calaway ‘The Undertaker’ himself, as he is yet to speak on, as well as clarify his Sunday night action.
