TENSION is gradually mounting within the Anyaa-Sowutuom constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Greater Accra Region ahead of government’s announcement of who becomes the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.
The confusion happened when a group of young men angrily protested alleged plots by the Constituency Treasurer, Madam Hajia, and a member of the Council of Elders, Dr. Emmanuel Lamptey, for the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Albert Ekow Sam, to step down in the MCE race.
Dr. Lamptey, who has since denied this allegation, says he does not have any ill-motive against Mr. Ekow Sam.
The angry youth, believed to be loyalists of the constituency chairman, kicked against the decision and threatened to lock up the constituency office to prevent an intended press conference by a group called Concerned Grassroots Members of the NPP in Anyaa-Sowutuom.
According to the well-built young men, there was no way they will allow such a press conference to be held anywhere in the constituency.
According to them, the event was geared towards the promotion of other candidates, including Dr. Lamptey who is vying for the position of MCE in the constituency.
“We shall not allow anybody to organise a press conference anywhere in this area because it is an agenda to promote other potential candidates. The people of Anyaa-Sowutuom want the constituency chairman so we will not allow anybody to come and thwart our effort. Mr. Ekow Sam has done a lot for the party and we shall not allow his efforts to go waste,” they stressed.
The group added that they will only agree for another person to become the MCE for the area if Mr. Ekow is given another appointment elsewhere.
“If Albert Ekow Sam is not given any appointment, we shall not allow anybody to get the position of MCE in Anyaa-Sowutuom. No Ekow Sam, No MCE,” they warned.
