The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has underscored the harsh situations teacher trainees in the country went through when their allowances were cancelled.
CETAG says when the allowances were cancelled, students had no money to pay their fees, buy books and go for teaching practice but with the restoration of the allowances, teacher trainees will be better off.
The teacher trainee allowances were cancelled by the Mahama-led administration which raised serious confrontations between the teacher trainees and government.
But after the assumption of office by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the president has promised to restore the allowance in March 2017.
Commenting on the issue on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Monday, the National Secretary of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana, Prince Obeng Hema explained that teacher trainees are supposed to attend school for five days but due to the cancellation of the allowance, most of them are compelled to attend school twice a week.
He said students absent themselves to enable them fend for themselves and that has affected teacher trainee education tremendously.
Mr. Obeng Hema praised the government and called on it to also look at the plight of the teachers in the country.
He said while the students have a peace of mind to study, teachers must also have a peace of mind to teach the students “because when they are happy we are happy too and when they are sad, we are also sad”.
