The revelation was made by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment’s Principal Trade Officer, Mr Wilfred Kahwa, in a speech he delivered during a workshop and the Annual General Meeting of National Network of Farmers Groups Tanzania (MVIWATA).

Mr Khawa in his speech which centered on government commitment towards making Tanzania an industrialised country, indicated that the 1,423 industries were developed between October 2015 and October 2016. According to him, some 19 industrial development projects initiated within the year (October 2015 to October 2016) are also under implementation.

Mr Kahwa named regions where the industries have been set up which include Coast, Kigoma, Lindi, Mtwara, Tanga and Mwanza. Majority of the industries, according to the Principal Trade Officer, included manufacturing and processing industries as well as other large and medium ones.

He explained that the government is committed to ensuring that her goal of making Tanzania an industrialized country is met according to plans. He noted that currently, 9.1% of the country’s GDP is coming from industries, and that the government aims at hitting 15% by 2020.

The workshop which was organised by MVIWATA was aimed at discussing and deliberating on the position of peasants in the country towards the development of industrial economy in Tanzania. The MVIWATA expressed the need for the government to embark on serious and committed measures that would ensure that small farmers in the country are prepared well towards making Tanzania industrialised.

The Morogoro Regional Commissioner (RC), Stephen Kebwe who opened the workshop, assured the participants of the network of government’s commitment to solving the challenges facing them in the country.

Also speaking at the workshop, Chairperson of the Network, Ms Veronica Sophy, said that peasants were vital in the development of an industrialised economy. It was therefore necessary, according to her, for the authority to start grooming them by creating friendly environment for their productions.

She also reiterated the need for government to intervene in various cases of land conflicts and poor agricultural inputs being witnessed by farmers across the country. This she said, will enable them to cope well in the move towards the country’s massive industrialization.
