The former President gave out this advice while speaking to Joy News after the inauguration of the new President of Ghana, Nana Adoo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Saturday, 7th January, 2017. According to Kufuor, President Akufo-Addo’s address is “the event of greatest impact” at the inaugural ceremony.

During his inaugural speech, Nana Addo had urged Ghanaians to start with themselves in effecting the expected change which his government is promising them. He explained that for the promised change to happen, it must start at the individual level with every Ghanaian changing his or her personal attitudes and lifestyle.

He condemned what he described as “sitting on the fence” or “spectator citizenship”, in which citizens only depend on the role of the government for the country to get better. He further stressed that all Ghanaians must be at the centre of the change for it to be achieved.

“Fellow citizens, you must be at the centre of the change. The change we have voted for will have to start with each of us as individuals.”

“…start with little changes in our own individual attitudes and practices. The change can and should start now and with us as individuals,” President Akufo-Addo implored.

Ex-president Kufuor lauded the new President’s inaugural speech as “well crafted” and “unifying”. He therefore called on Ghanaians not to take Nana Addo’s words in the address as just a speech but to take it seriously as well as put it into practice.

The inauguartion of President-elect, Nana Addo  Dankwa Akufo-Addo was held on the 7th of January, 2017 at the Black Stars Square, Accra. Nana Akufo-Addo’s inauguration follows his victory in the presidential elections held on the 7th of December, 2016.

Nana Addo who was a third-time presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) got 53.85% of valid votes to defeat incumbent President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who polled 44.4%. Mahama’s defeat made him the first sitting President to lose a second term election bid in the history of Ghana.

The theme of Nana Addo’s presidential race since 2008 has always bordered around CHANGE. Many have likened circumstances surrounding Ghana’s 2016 Election to that of their neighbouring African county, Nigeria’s 2015 Election. Click here to get details of the striking coincidences.
