The Ghana Police administration has dismissed suggestions that its recent directive to personnel to cease motor checks was politically motivated.
This after a memo sighted by Citi News revealed that the Police Command has ordered the suspension of all vehicle checks and the inspection of driver’s licenses and vehicle documents.
The Police Service has rather explained that the decision to suspend the checks was aimed at helping its personnel focus on reducing needless vehicular accidents.
The Director General in Charge of Administration at the Police Service, COP Ransford Moses Ninson addressed a press conference on Friday where he stated that “the signal not to check documents of drivers and vehicles was not directed at the MTTD personnel but the highway patrol personnel.”
“After all, every police officer in whose presence a crime is being committed can and must arrest the culprit and ensure that he is prosecuted,” he added.
COP Ninson noted that the Police had observed that “the over-concentration of MTTD personnel on motor checks at the expense of traffic management has the likelihood of causing road fatalities.”
As an example, he noted that “there have been instances were some MTTD personnel have ignored broken down vehicle which pose great danger to other road users on roads because of supposed motor checks.”
