A suspected Ebola case at the University Hospital of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is causing fear and panic at the hospital and among the university community.
The suspect, a man believed to be in his 70s from Sierra Leone, who was rushed to the University Hospital in the late hours of Tuesday, December 2, 2014 by family members recorded extremely high temperature on arrival.
He had been in the country for a little over a week for a funeral when his wife fell ill and was admitted at the same hospital for an undisclosed medical condition.
A staff of the hospital who prefers to remain anonymous indicated that the man had a history of vomiting and diarrhea and later passed on bloody urine.
She continued that due to the condition of the man, the medical doctor on duty and all the medical staff who came into contact with the patient have been quarantined in the hospital. The suspected patient has also been quarantined at the University Hospital.
A blood sample of the patient has been sent to Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) for Ebola screening and confirmation. The hospital has been closed down temporarily awaiting the results from Noguchi which is expected to be ready by Thursday.
Medical staffs of the University Hospital had already been adequately trained and equipped to handle Ebola related cases thus there is no cause for alarm.
Students are advised to remain calm and follow the general preventive measures advertised by the Ministry of Health and the media. Accra Report reporters are on the ground and will bring you updates on this story.
