The Ghana Education Service will join the security services and the Banda traditional authorities on March 20, to decide on the appropriate time for teachers and other workers who fled the town due to threats of xenophobic attack,  to return.

Officials of the Ministry of Education and the Ghana National Association of Teachers are expected to take part in the meeting that is scheduled to take place in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Teachers and other workers including government staff have deserted their posts after a group calling itself Concern Members of Banda Ahenkro issued public notices that it intends visiting mayhem on those foreigners in the town; akin to the largely condemned xenophobic attacks in South Africa on persons it considered strangers in the area.

Speaking on Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwene on Friday, the Headmaster of Banda Ahenkro Roman Catholic Junior High School, Jones Agyeman, said their decision to abandon their duty posts was taken by their employers hence can only return when they receive official directive from them.

“When the issue happened, the GES and GNAT told us to leave so we shall meet on Monday and listen to them. If we do something otherwise, it will show disrespect to our employers,” he explained.

He added: “Teachers have no problem returning but we have our employers so they should talk to them before we can return. If the authorities call us, we shall go because we are under an authority so if they call us we shall go.”

Meanwhile, Nana Kyeame Sie Kwadwo Malisto has warned that if perpetrators of such xenophobia do not own up within a week, chiefs and other traditional authorities will take the matter up and handle it in their own way.
