Special Prosecutor Won’t Witch-Hunt – George Andah Prods Ayine

The Member of Parliament for Ewutu Senya West, George Andah, has described as “irresponsible” comments by a former deputy Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, that the yet-to- be appointed special prosecutor will “witch-hunt” members of the former NDC government.

According to Dr. Ayine, who is also the MP Bolga East, the establishment of the special prosecutors’ office is nothing but a charade to browbeat officials of the previous administration.

For him, the intended anti-graft body will not have the needed independence to fight corruption as being touted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

President Akufo-Addo during the 2016 electioneering promised to set up the office of the Special prosecutor as part of his strategies in fighting corruption, which appears endemic in Ghana.

According to StarrFMonline.com sources, respected lawyer Akoto Ampaw had been penciled for the job by the President.

Not enthused by the president’s decision, Dr. Ayine alleged while speaking on the floor of parliament Wednesday March 1, 2017 that members of the NDC will be the primary target of the special prosecutor.

“In our situation where I am very certain and we on this side can predict with almost mathematical certainty, which the office of the special prosecutor will be aiming at prosecuting former ministers and appointees of the former government,” he said.

In his rebuttal, however, Mr. Andah said Dr. Ayine’s inference is ill-fated.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise on the point of order…I think honourable member on the other side is misleading the House [parliament].

He is making assertions that the intent to establish the office of a special prosecutor is to witch-hunt political opponents and I think that is most uncalled for and that is most irresponsible in this house,” he retorted on the floor of parliament.
