A South African military ship SAS Amatola valour class frigate has visited Ghana with a crew of about 180 members. The visit is to commemorate the centenary celebration of SS Mendi, the south African ship which sunk after collision with a large cargo stream ship, Darro on 21 February 1917 during the First World War.
646 people were killed; most of whom were black South African troops.
The SAS Amatola arrived in Ghana at 7gmt at the Tema port. The crew members were received by the South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Lulama Xingwana and the Defense Advisory Colonel Patience Masisi.
As part of the centenary celebration, there would be a colorful ceremony on Friday 31 March at the Tema port. Also, an educational program would be held to educate school children within the Tama community about SS Mendi.

The South African delegation paid a courtesy call on the Flag Officer commanding the eastern command, Commodore Eric Adu where he exchanged gifts with the Captain of Amatola, Frans Roux.
