Homosexuality has remained a disputed issue in almost every country in the world – that which causes massive argument when brought up. In a country like South Africa, the act of homosexuality though legalized, meets constant debate whenever it comes up.

On this not,; a sermon on homosexuality delivered in South Africa by the founder and Presiding Bishop of the Lighthouse Chapel International in Ghana, Pastor Dag Heward-Mills, has caused a deep controversy in the country.

The visiting Ghanaian bishop is said to have made homophobic statements while preaching at the Soweto-based Grace Bible Church. Bishop Heward during his sermon was heard rebuking the act of homosexuality, as he described it as unnatural and un-biblical. The Ghanaian bishop said animals have multiple partners, but one would never see creatures of the same sex partnering up.

Dogs, cats, leopards mention the animal. Which one has one partner? It is just like homosexuality you don’t have male and male.

The Heward-Mills anti-gay sermon which was not entertained by some, saw the exit of TV personality Somizi Mhlongo, a homosexual from the church. The sermon has caused a deep division among South Africans. While some lauded Pastor Heward-Mills’ biblical interpretation of homosexuality, others have condemned it.

To openly express his great displeasure over Heward-Mills anti-gay sermon, Mhlongo the known homosexual who was filled with fury, took to social media to rebuke the pastor’s ‘homophobic’ comments. Mhlongo posted some videos on social media after he walked out of the sermon saying he wasn’t going to sit there and be offended.

“This is who I am. I am a gay man. Get it straight into your skull. My soul is alright with my God. Let me deal with my God and my soul. Don’t tell me”, he said in one of the videos.

The celebrity went further to say that the pastor should rather just say that homosexuals are not welcome at the church so gay people can find a church that will accept them.

The so called anti-gay sermon caused an uproar in the media with different mixed reactions on the issue. While some have lauded the Ghanaian pastor for speaking the ‘truth’ others have castigated him for being judgmental.

However Reverend Ezekiel Mathole, spokesperson for the Grace Bible Church in Soweto has maintained his church doesn’t discriminate against gay people. Mathole says that while “some gay people were offended”, homosexuality was not the only thing visiting Bishop Dag Heward-Mills was talking about on that day.

Speaking to eNCA, Mathole said that the celebrity has the right to respond as he did, but added that, “As a church, we don’t discriminate against gay people and we will never do, and we have never done that”.

He also added it was Somizi’s right to protest in the way that he protested.
