As part of activities to mark the International Day of Tolerance, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on the police to quickly deal with any electoral violence in the lead up to the December polls.
The NCCE is asking Ghanaians to tolerate divergent views and protect the image of Ghana as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
The NCCE has also urged political parties, especially the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to show exemplary leadership by rallying their supporters to uphold the values of democracy.
The International Day of Tolerance message follows electoral-related violence between NDC and NPP recently.
NDC supporters clashed with security men at the residence of the NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo on Sunday. Before Sunday’s incident, there were clashes at Ododoiodoo between NPP and NDC supporters. In both instances that were gunshots.
The UN-adopted Day is marked on November 16 every year and affirms that tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference.
“It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognises the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others.
People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe,” the UN says about the Day on its website.
The NCCE’s statement to mark the Day also condemned the violence that has characterised the electoral process.
The NCCE wants the police to bring perpetrators of the violence to book.
