Security Council Closes Down Kintampo Waterfalls

The Kintampo North Municipal Security Council has temporally closed down the Kintampo Waterfalls following Sunday’s unfortunate incident that claimed 18 lives and left scores of persons with various degrees of injuries.

Officials indicate that the move is to allow for a combine team of security personnel ensure that bodies that were trapped under trees have all been found and as well ensure that the place is safe for tourists who visit the area.

Chief Superintendent Desmond Owusu Boampong, the Kintampo Divisional Police Commander will not disclose when exactly the place will be open for operations but said it is important for a general assessment of the place and to but in measures to avert a future recurrence.

Meanwhile the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Catherine Abelema Afeku has expressed her sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims of the incident.

In a statement issued and signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry it said “The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Catherine Abelema Afeku, wishes to express her sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims caught up in the unfortunate rainstorm that hit the Kintampo waterfalls on Sunday 19th March 2017, killing and injuring many . The dead and injured, mostly students were part of different groups visiting the site.

We extend our condolences to the families of the dead and pray for the injured who have been rushed to the Kintampo and Techiman General Hospitals”, she said.

The Ghana Tourism Authority will work closely with the Ghana Police and the Kintampo District Assembly to ensure the families receive needed support and information. The statement urges the media and the General Public to be circumspect in their reportage especially in the sharing of images of the dead and critically injured”
