Rev Martey Dropped Peace Council Offer

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has confirmed claim by outgoing Moderator of the Church that he rejected an offer to serve on the National Peace Council.

Spokesperson of the church, Reverend George Larbi, says Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey notified him about the process leading to his nomination and rejection of the offer.

“He discussed with me when he was nominated but he told me that he has turned down the offer and suggested to the Christian Council of Ghana to replace him,” he told Evans Mensah, host of Joy FM’s Newsnite programme Monday.

Rev. Martey over the weekend disclosed he rejected an offer from the Deputy Interior Minister, James Agalga, to lobby for the Chairmanship of the National Peace Council.

According to him, Mr Agalga sent him a text message to that effect but the “Holy Spirit” guided him to reject the offer.

This follows a controversial week in which the former Moderator stoked the fire about an allegation that a politician whose identity he did not reveal tried to bribe him with $100,000, a 4×4 SUV and a mansion with a swimming pool at Trasacco.

Interior Minister, Prosper Bani, reacted to his claim saying he was rather dropped by the Christian Council and replaced with Rev. Dr Adu Gyamfi.

He says the rules setting out the Peace Council are very well clear that they are not to intervene in the process leading to the appointment of the chairperson.

Mr Bani described Rev Martey’s claim that he was asked to lobby as “absolutely inaccurate statement.”

He challenged him to prove the alleged text message he says was sent to him by Mr Agalga.

Reacting to the Ministry’s fight back, Rev. Larbi says the former Moderator was nominated but he showed no interest.

He explained the Christian Council was compelled to write a letter to the Ministry withdrawing his nomination and suggesting another in his place.

On the alleged text message, Rev. Larbi says he was not aware of the “conversation between the Moderator and the Deputy Minister.”
