Mr Rawlings believes if the new Ghanaian leader pays attention to corruption and delivers even 30 percent of his promises to the people of Ghana, the country will be a better place.

He was speaking to some actors and actresses who paid a courtesy call on him. Mr Rawlings has been an avowed critic of incidents of corruption ever since he handed over power in 2001.

Even though his own government was not without corruption the ex-Ghanaian leader has nonetheless made it a personal campaign to speak against corruption.

He has since criticised the Kufuor regime as well as the late Atta Mills administration, accusing them of failing to fight corruption in their respective governments.

The Mahama government, was not spared the criticisms of corruption by Mr Rawlings either.

After a fierce 2016 election which saw the governing National Democratic Congress losing to the New Patriotic Party, Ex-president John Rawlings believes Akufo-Addo is the best person to fight corruption at this time of the country’s history.

“We are very fortunate also that somebody like Nana Akufo-Addo has emerged over here.

“I respect him for certain principles, values and I will continue to pray and hope that he stays the track and will devote at least 30% of his time to fight corruption and corruptible tendencies,” he said.

Corruption has been the bane of Ghana’s development with several millions of dollars of public funds sinking into private pockets annually.

The canker became a topical issue in the just ended elections with the then candidate Akufo-Addo vowing to fight it with all his might.

He swore to appoint an Independent Prosecutor General who will take on the responsibility of prosecuting corrupt public officials without fear or favour. Barely 100 days into office as president, Nana Akufo-Addo is yet to outline the procedures for the appointment of the Prosecutor General.

It is not clear yet who may be tasked to perform that function but that person must be seen to be non-partisan, firm in his or her fight against corruption.
