Voting started and ended on December 7 -the D-day of Ghana’s general elections. It’s been more than 36 hours since polls closed after Wednesday’s voting and Ghanaians have been sitting on tenterhooks awaiting certified results from EC. The Electoral Commission has since, been reviewing results from respective polling stations scattered across the 275 constituencies in the country.

A large section of Ghanaians who have run out of patience, have begun agitating for the release of the results by the Commission. But President Mahama has urged Ghanaians to remain calm, as the EC collates and reviews the results.

The EC has also revealed reasons behind the delay in declaring election results. According to the EC, the delay is due to the discovery of some instances of over-voting in some polling stations. EC boss Charlotte Osei who shed light on the issue, advised returning officers to adopt manual transmission of results and ditch e-transmission, as the latter may have been compromised.

Mahama took to social media to calm the nerves of anxious Ghanaians who cannot wait a minute longer, for EC’s declaration.

Let’s allow EC to carry out its constitutional mandate. We’ll make Ghana proud no matter [the] outcome

The closure of the voting process on December 7, brought about lots of speculations as to who the possible winner of the 2016 presidential elections is. Why some political parties speculated, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claimed leads in the presidential election, even before provisional results were released.

The NPP went as far as asking the President Mahama of the NDC, to concede defeat, after calling out provisional results.

Despite all the announcements, Ghana continues to wait anxiously to hear the certified results of the election, which will be announced by the EC -the only body with a sole mandate to declare election results.
