Akufo-Addo merges Energy and Power Ministries with the hope that with a competent head, the desired results will be produced.
New Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that the Energy and Petroleum Ministry and the Power Ministry, will henceforth be one single Ministry. Nana Addo made the announcement on Tuesday, 10th January, when he presented the first batch of his ministerial appointees at the Flagstaff House.
“We are pitting back petroleum and power to have one person head the various institutions,” President Akufo-Addo pointed out.
Akufo-Addo merges the Energy and Petroleum and Power ministries, appointing Boakye Agyarko to head the resultant Ministry of Energy and Power. The President expressed confidence in Mr. Agyarko to be able to tackle the challenges bedeviling the hitherto two ministries.
There were all kinds of problems about the duplication of activities and the need for us to rationalize the infrastructure in our energy sector. So I think that Boakye Agyarko is in the position to undertake that task and do it successfully. So he’s the one that I am recommending to parliament for approval, Nana Addo indicated.
The Power Ministry was created by former President John Mahama at the peak of the electricity crisis (dumsor) in 2014. Mahama had pointed out that the electricity issue will be best tackled under a separate ministry. According to him, the Ministry of Power will be in a better position to have a direct focus on the generation, supply and efficiency of power to be at per with the ongoing economic growth in the country.
It was in this vein that he appointed Dr. Kwabena Donkor, MP for Pru East and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Minister of Power. However, Dr. Donkor voluntarily resigned one year later, having failed to fulfil a personal promise to fix the paralyzing power crisis facing the country then.
