Prepare For Mahama’s Second Coming

Even before Addo takes over for his four-year term, the soon to be opposition party in the country, NDC, is preparing the minds of Ghanaians for what will be Mahama’s second coming. This is coming after two members of the party in separate comments made it clear that the party will ensure that the outgoing president returns on the ballots in 2020.

The first person to make the proposition was Ashanti Regional Minister, Alexander Ackon who stated that President John Mahama will be retained as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2020 elections. Making the proposition over 10 days ago, the minister said with Mahama as the leader of the party, it will be more organised for the elections.

To add to Mr. Ackon’s sentiments, the Minister of Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuije said the party will return Mahama as its presidential candidate in the 2020 elections, despite a humiliating defeat in the December polls.

Mr. Vanderpuije made it known on Wednesday during a radio chat show with Starr 103.5 FM, that the party will force the president into contesting the election. He adds that “If John Mahama will not go, Amissah-Arthur will not go,” putting a rest to any speculation on whether or not Mahama’s deputy would charge the course in 2020.

At the moment, it remains unclear if we will witness a Mahama’s second coming, as it is largely dependent on how well he is able to hold the party together while playing the opposition at all fronts. Most importantly, it depends also on how the President-Elect, Nana Akufo-Addo manages the trust of the people by keeping to his words.

After the December 12th presidential elections, Mr Mahama became the first sitting president in the country’s fourth republic to lose an election. The president, however, still has an overwhelming support within his party, as well as among other Ghanaians.
