Pregnant Women in Koforidua Addicted to Alcohol

A Senior Nursing Officer at the Antenatal Unit of the Koforidua Government Hospital has revealed that most pregnant women who visit the facility are addicted to alcohol in spite of the adverse effect it has on the unborn babies.
According to Juliet Anador, efforts by health authorities at the hospital to reorient the yet-to-be nursing mothers have not yielded the needed results.
The Senior Nursing Officer disclosed this at a sensitization program organised by Accra Brewery limited for pregnant women in Koforidua.
She said pregnant women who drink alcohol risk giving birth to children with a ‘fetal alcohol spectrum disorder’ which can cause speech and language delays,abnormal facial features, small head size and other dangerous deformities among babies.
She advised Pregnant women to desist from alcohol during antenatal and post-natal in other to secure the health and safety of their babies.
The Corporate Communications Manager of ABL Joyce Ahiadome on her part stated that even though the company aims at making financial gains, it is mindful of the health implications of alcohol abuse and the unqualified persons who consume their products, hence the nationwide awareness creation to ensure that such persons stay away from alcohol.
