Possession of Voter’s ID Doesn’t Mean One Is Automatically On the List – EC

The Electoral Commission has said that the mere possession of a voter ID card does not guarantee that one is on the voter’s register.

“The fact that one possesses an ID card does not automatically make him or her a qualified voter or guarantee that his or he name is on the EC’s register”, Deputy Chairperson, Corporate Services of the Commission, Madam Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, disclosed on GTV’s Ask The EC.

“This is because some people misplace the cards and try to outsmart the process by re-registering at different regions or polling stations, forgetting that if detected they forfeit their voting right as it may amount to double voting in some cases,” she explained.

On Dr. Nduom’s request for 5 mins with the EC, Rebecca Kabuki Adjafo, a commissioner who was also on the show confirmed that Progressive People’s Party (PPP) flag bearer met with officials of the Commission as requested on Wednesday following his disqualification from contesting the December polls.

But report says the meeting could not persuade the EC to rescind its decision to disqualify him from the presidential race. “He (Dr. Nduom) has had his 5 minutes he requested with the EC, but nothing has changed,” Rebecca Kabuki Adjafo averred.

When quizzed on why the candidates were penalized instead of the subscribers, she said that the aspirants should have done due diligence to cross check such facts as they were served with a copy of the register for that purpose.

The EC Commissioner, seized the opportunity to admonish electorates to take exercises like the exhibition of registers by the Commission seriously.
