Pope Francis congratulates Nana Addo through the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich who paid a courtesy visit to the office of the President at the Flagstaff House on Wednesday, 22nd February, 2017.

The Apostolic Nuncio revealed that Pope Francis’ concern is reflective of his high regard for President Akufo-Addo, Ghana and her practice of true democracy. He also requested that the President appoints a new Ghanaian Ambassador to Vatican since there is none at the moment.

Responding to the congratulatory message, President Akufo-Addo expressed immense appreciation to Pope Francis for the honourable recognition. He also thanked the Pope for the great work he has been doing across he globe.

Making reference to the Catholic relief Services, The praised the Catholic Church for the tremendous support they have been giving Ghana over the years which spans across education, health and social provisions.

Concluding, President Akufo-Addo promised to strengthen Ghana’s relationship with the Vatican throughout his tenure as president. This he said he will do, for the mutual benefit of Ghanaians.

President Nana Addo’s victory in the 2016 elections has been a remarkable one attracting compliments and comments from across the globe. The win has interested prominent persons from around the world from different perspectives.

While some are admiring his perseverance, having vied for the post for three consecutive times, others are simply hailing his predecessor, former president John Mahama for the free and fair election conducted, as well as the very smooth and peaceful transition of powers which hardly characterize the defeat of an incumbent.

The incident is also seen as remarkable since it took place when the need for the practice of true democracy is on a high scale in the African continent; especially while considering what is happening in some other African countries – withe the Gambia serving as a typical example.
