Politicians in the country have come under attack from the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Bernard Mornah for their alleged roles in illegal mining activities in the country.

“Today more people are getting into active politics just because they want to engage in illegal mining”, the PNC chairman claimed.

“If he/she is a politician everyone is afraid to stop him from engaging in this illegal activity. So therefore the youth have entered into the game of politics for license to operate mining” the chairman further alleged.

Mr Mornah therefore urged politicians who have nothing to help reclaim the polluted environment to stay away from issues about protecting the lands for future generations.

“I blame them for our environmental degradation. They are the first people to cause it and must keep mute if we are discussing galamsey”

He called for a nationwide demonstration against the government, chiefs and individuals who actions continue to cause environmental degradation to the people.

“Everyone should support this call against them. We cannot allow them to exploit our minerals while we surfer from their activities at end” he urged.

Meanwhile, the Lands Minister, John Peter Amewu has issued a 3-week ultimatum to all illegal miners to vacate the mining sites or incurred the wrath of a taskforce he will set to flush them out.

But Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong says the three-week ultimatum issued by the Lands Minister against illegal mining in the country is too short.

He said it is important for the minister to find a lasting solution to deal with the menace and not give timelines which he believes will rather worsen the situation.

“Three weeks ultimatum by the Lands minister I believe is too short in dealing with galamsey activities in the country. It will shock you to know that these illegal miners will still go on with those activities even as their time elapse and that is why I think lasting solution will help” he said on Adom TV’s Morning Show “Badwam” Thursday.
