Two persons have been arrested for possessing 500 rounds of ammunition at Agbogbloshie in Accra where violence clashes last week led to the death of one person and injured several others.

Twenty-five-year old scrap dealer, Imoro Abdul Wahab, who was in possession of the ammunition, claimed he bought it from a 58-year-old registered arms dealer, Kweku Amankwah at the cost of GHC1,000

“The intent for possessing the ammunition is still yet unknown and under thorough investigations,” Accra Police Regional Public Relations Officer, ASP Afia Tengey, told journalists on Wednesday.

Wahab was arrested Tuesday at 2:30pm by Police officers on duty at Agbogbloshie following a tip off, TV3’s Peter Adattor reported. The police say Wahab upon interrogation named Amankwah as the one who supplied the ammunition, made up of 250 AA and BB cartridges apiece, our correspondent added.

ASP Tengey said both men are being detained for investigations after which they will be processed for court. According to the Police, the joint police/military team has since last week’s clashes restored calm to the area for people to go about their businesses, noting ”

The Police is still promoting dialogue between the feuding factions.” The Police has thus warned the public not to take advantage of last week’s incident and transact businesses in illegal arms, ammunition or implements that are likely to destabilise the peace since those caught will be dealt with per the country’s laws.

Meanwhile, two other persons who were arrested with locally manufactured pistols and ammunition during last week’s clashes have been put before court.

The two, all scrap dealers, are Yakubu Sulleymana, 34 years and 19-year old Alhassan Zakaria.
