Police Commander’S Office Burgled, GH¢40,000 Cash Exhibits Stolen

Suspected thieves have allegedly broken into the office of the Kwesimintsim District Police Commander in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis in the Western Region and made away with cash exhibits amounting to GH¢40,000.
The policemen who were on duty at the district police command are said to have been outwitted by the thieves.
The theft, which happened last Friday, has puzzled the command, as the policemen on duty at the police station that day claim they did not hear anything until the district commander entered his office to realise that it had been burgled.
According to sources at the police command, they suspected that the thieves had the keys to the main entrance to the office of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
They said the thieves might have opened and closed the entrance before breaking into the commander’s office with a chisel and a hammer.
‘Operation’
The suspects are believed to have used the same implements to force open the metallic vault to make away with the cash exhibits.
According to the police, the thieves were believed to have taken their time to open the envelopes to take their contents, but they did not touch non-cash exhibits.
The theft was not detected until the district commander, who was returning from a social function in the company of another senior officer, decided to pass by his office to do something.
The police said the district commander opened the main entrance which passes through the CID Unit to his office, only to realise that his door and the locker containing the exhibits had been forced open.
The attention of those on duty was drawn to the incident and they could only express shock at the development.
Investigations
Currently, the Western Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has taken over investigations and the initial suspects are those on duty who claimed they did not see any movement or hear any noise from the activities of the thieves.
